Description
Equinoxial dial in gilded brass and silver, signed ‘Iohann Schrettegger in Augsburg’, first quarter of the 19th century.
Octagonal plate incorporating a silver four-point compass with a magnetic declination mark, and a blued steel needle. The rim of the plate is engraved with a pattern of semicircles and features a silver equinoctial ring engraved with the hours 3–12–9, complete with its gnomon, and a silver arc for latitudes.
Diameter 5.4 cm.
Work by Johann Nepomuk Schrettegger (1764–1843). We have included a photocopy of Schrettegger’s original instructions for this ‘compass’.
