PLANETARY CLOCK with rotating dials, unsigned but made by Devon Clocks Ltd (UK) for the Heritage Collection, last quarter of the 20th century. Mahogany, polished and silver-plated brass. A circular base supporting, between two curved-sided plates, two barrel-driven movements: one controlling the time display on the silver-plated rotating dials, the other driving a planetary mechanism showing the planets Mercury, Venus, the Earth with the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn revolving around the Sun at their own respective periods (Earth: 365 days; Saturn: 29.5 years), within a zodiacal calendar. Visible inverted anchor escapement on a platform. Winding from the base. With its bell. Base diameter 25.2 cm. Height (with bell) 23 cm. One of the astronomical clocks of various designs created by Ernest John Mercer (1928–) in collaboration with W. Sheen and Robert Glober for the St James’s House Company and the Heritage Collection.
