Description
Drum-shaped hanging clock with alarm, unsigned, Southern Germany, third quarter of the 16th century.
Gilded brass and iron.
Gilded dial with three hour circles: on the outer circle, I to XII with dots for the half-hours; on a second circle, alternately engraved rectangles for the 15-minute marks; towards the centre, the hours 13 to 24 around a removable alarm disc; 1 to 12 around a rosette in the centre; touch marks around the rim to tell the time at night; an openwork iron hand.
Heavily oxidised iron movement, solid plates, square pillars, barrel, verge escapement, stackfreed, flat balance wheel, adjustment by pig’s bristle, small openwork cock, chime on gong.
Gilded brass case with relief work and openwork; the cover features a row of grotesque masks surrounding heads and foliage in the centre; the back features a symmetrical foliage design surrounding mythological figures (gods and goddesses?), the openwork middle section featuring hunting scenes (accident).
Diameter 6.3 cm.
