Description
WATCH with an oval-shaped case in gilded brass and silver, signed (on the movement) ‘N Vollant Aparis’, c. 1610.
Silver hour ring, with Roman numerals and half-hours indicated by a star, set upon a gilt-brass plate engraved in relief with flowers and foliage undulating symmetrically on either side of a hare at 6 o’clock, the centre is engraved with a view of a village by a river; one iron hand.
Full-plate movement in gilded brass, Egyptian pillars, an openwork cock engraved with flowers and foliage, verge escapement, flat steel balance wheel, fusee with gut cord, adjustment by ratchet wheel.
Oval case with two gilded brass covers; the dial cover is engraved in the centre on the outside with a floral motif and on the inside with a mandorla; plain case back; engraved hinges and fastenings; silver middle engraved with foliage (heavily worn).

Nicolas Vollant is known to have been working on Rue St Honoré in 1592. His son Matthieu was baptised on 11 November 1596. In 1612 he was one of the unsuccessful candidates to produce the clock for Paris Town Hall, and in 1617 he supplied an enamelled watch to Maria Maddalena, Grand Duchess of Tuscany. A cylindrical table clock of his making is housed at the International Watchmaking Museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
