Description
Silver rod watch without a fusee but with an alarm, signed (on the movement) ‘C. Gouchon à Ab[b]euille’, circa 1680/1685.
Silver dial with raised black Roman numerals, Arabic numerals for the minutes, a gilded brass alarm disc in the centre, two hands and hour markers for the alarm in blued steel.
Gilded brass movement, baluster pillars, primitive openwork cock engraved with flowers, barrel without fusee, openwork and engraved alarm barrel, set by ratchet wheel, striking on a gong.
Openwork silver bowl-shaped case with a frieze engraved with mascarons, flowers and foliage inhabited by birds; the caseback engraved with a rosette.
Diameter 4.4 cm.

A fine example of a watch without a fusee, the latter being considered by some watchmakers to be no longer necessary following the introduction of the balance spring.
