Description
A watch with an ‘onion’-shaped stem and an alarm, signed ‘Langlois A Paris’, circa 1690/95. Dial with cartouches, Roman numerals for the hours, reading at 15-minute intervals on an inner circle, alarm disc in the centre, one iron hand. Gilded brass movement, large openwork and engraved bridge, silver regulator disc, blued steel rack, Egyptian pillars, verge escapement, fusee with chain, engraved alarm barrel, striking mechanism on a gong. Plain openwork brass case; the back and bezel may originally have been covered in leather; the crown is openwork and engraved. Diameter 6.1 cm. Presumed to be the work of Jacques Langlois, who in 1692 was part of the group of clockmakers organised by the Abbé de Hauteville to circumvent Huygens’s patent on the regulating spiral.
