Silver staff watch signed ‘Robert Martin AD 1827 No. 628’,
White enamel dial (small crack), Roman numerals, brass hands.
Full-plate movement, cock engraved with a grotesque mask and foliage, cylindrical pillars, verge escapement, flat polished steel balance wheel, adjustment via a sector engraved on the plate. Plain silver case bearing the London hallmarks for 1827/8, the case maker’s initials ‘BN’ for Benjamin Norton, double case with the same marks, advertising leaflet for ‘W. J. Patrick, Watch & Clockmaker, 26, London Street, Greenwich’. Diameter 5.5 cm.
An interesting watch by an unknown maker. William J. Patrick is known to have been active in Greenwich between 1827 and 1839. His wife or daughter, Mary Ann, who is known to have been in Greenwich in 1847, appears to have succeeded him.
