Sign-marked (dial and movement) ‘G. E. Frodsham Gracechurch St London 9766’ pocket watch, circa 1874.
White enamel dial, Roman numerals, seconds sub-dial (Arabic numerals) at 6 o’clock, blued steel hands.
Three-quarter plate movement, engraved cock, detent escapement, compensated balance, blued steel cylindrical hairspring.
Cylindrical brass case, originally silver-plated; polished mahogany travel case with silver inlays of bands and escutcheons, the interior lined with velvet (heavily worn).
Watch diameter 4.6 cm.
Case dimensions: 9.1 x 7.4 x 4.2 cm.
George Edward Frodsham (1831–1901) succeeded his father as head of the family business at 31 Gracechurch Street at the age of eighteen. The firm was awarded a medal at the 1878 International Exhibition in Paris.
