Description
Silver carriage clock with striking mechanism and alarm, bearing the signatures ‘Julien Le Roy à Paris’ (movement) and ‘Le Roy à Paris’ (case), mid-18th century. Rear dial in white plastic, now discoloured, with blue numerals: Roman for the hours, Arabic for the minutes; hands (replaced) in blued steel. Gilded brass movement, silver regulator disc, openwork and engraved bridge, polished steel gong with a red stone, verge escapement, fusée with chain, three barrels, two of which are chiselled, flat pillars with chiselled decorations added at a later date, striking mechanism with two hammers striking a gong. Plain openwork silver case, ball-joint suspension, double case in silver and brass covered in dark leather (significant losses) with an engraved and openwork silver medallion on the back. Original square carrying case made of wood covered in black leather with gold trim, lined with chamois leather and bearing an inventory number in ink on the inside: ‘16158’. Diameter 12 cm. Case 18 x 18 cm. PROVENANCE Maxime Lesoive Collection (1918–2003), Le Havre. Chayette & Cheval auction, Tuesday 16 December 2003, lot 297, and indirectly to the current owner. An interesting example of a carriage watch, perhaps manufactured in Switzerland for Le Roy, or capitalising on his reputation. A similar watch is held at the Deutsches Museum, Munich (see Artemis Yagou in *Antiquarian Horology* xliv 2023, 539). According to a note inscribed on the inside of the bezel, this watch was serviced by Lesoive in June 1990. It is rare to find the original carrying case with the watch. Expert: Anthony TURNER
