Description
Wristwatch with a mandolin-shaped case in gilded brass [to be verified], enamelled, circa 1800.
White enamel dial numbered 2769, Arabic numerals, ‘Breguet’ hands, gold hands (the minute hand is missing).
Gilded brass movement no. 2769, openwork and engraved bridge with star-shaped cock, silver regulator disc, verge escapement, cylindrical pillars.
Case in the shape of a six-string mandolin, the body in translucent red enamel on a guilloché ground set with pearls, the back decorated with flowers, the middle section enamelled with part of the score of ‘l’air de la soirée orageuse’.
Diameter 2.6 cm; Length 6.2 cm.
*La Soirée orageuse* is a one-act opéra-comique with a libretto by Radet and music by Nicolas Dalayrac. Successfully staged at the Théâtre Italien in 1790 and 1791, C. Albert wrote a ‘Hymn to J. J. Rousseau’, based on a melody taken from this work, whilst a ‘Lament of an Unfortunate Victim of the Scoundrel Robespierre’ uses the same melody. Its significance on this piece of jewellery remains a matter of conjecture.
