Description
MOVEMENT from a watch signed ‘N. Plantard Abbev[ille]’, c. 1630.
This movement (missing the barrel, the balance wheel, the regulator and part of the escapement) is presented in a very interesting assembly comprising seven disparate elements:
1 A square base of veined red marble supporting a disc of the same material
2 A brass disc engraved with the figure of ‘Astronomea’ [sic], surrounded by various attributes (globe, compass, cylinder, set square, etc.)
3 A bronze figure of Chronos holding his hourglass
4 A rather incongruous trident of Neptune placed in Chronos’s left hand
5 An hour ring set upon a square dial, the centre of which is engraved with flowers; this may originally have been part of a small table clock. The hands are missing.
6 Two pairs of added corner pieces
7 Plantard’s incomplete movement

The assembly was probably carried out in the first half of the 19th century using parts from the 16th or 17th century, except for the engraved ‘Astronomy’ plate, which appears to be a contemporary piece made at the same time as the assembly.
