Description
CARRIAGE WATCH with striking mechanism and alarm, signed ‘N Norry A Gisors’, second quarter of the 17th century. Silver hour ring applied to the plate, marked in fifteen-minute intervals with fleur-de-lis markers for the half-hours, Roman numerals, centre engraved with flowers on a striated background, plain outer rim, and a blued steel ‘tulip’ hand. Full-plate movement in gilded brass, openwork cock engraved with flowers, count wheel entirely engraved with flowers and featuring a blued steel hand, verge escapement, fusee with chain, balance wheel (without hairspring) in steel, openwork and engraved alarm barrel, pyramidal pillars, striking mechanism on a gong. Gilded brass case, bezel openworked and engraved with flowers surrounded by bands, protected from dust by red silk. Diameter 9.7 cm. With its double key, the centre openwork and engraved with a tulip, and some remnants of the original silk. Nicolas Norry, clockmaker to Queen Marie de Médicis, was a member of a family of clockmakers and dial makers working in Gisors. The floral decoration on our watch can be compared with the designs contained in the *Livre Nouveau de Fleurs très-util pour l’Art d’Orfevrerie, et autres* (New Book of Flowers, Very Useful for the Art of Goldsmithing, and Other Works), 1645, by Nicolas Cochin the Elder (1610–1686).
