Description
SMALL SILVER WATCH with a double-decimal and duo-decimal dial, signed (dial and case) ‘Mellerio frères Baden Baden’, third quarter of the 19th century.
Silver dials
1 duo-decimal hour dial with Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the minutes, seconds at six o’clock, blued steel hands engraved with the numbers ‘2’ and ‘3’.
2 decimal hour and minute dials with a number between 1 and 5 displayed in a window; blued steel hands engraved with the numbers ‘4’ and ‘5’. Winding and time-setting via the pendant. In need of restoration. Diameter 3.1 cm.
With its black shagreen case lined with silk and red velvet and signed twice.

Following the upheaval of the 1848 revolution, the brothers Jean François and Jean Antoine Mellerio settled in Madrid. Upon their return to Paris, they opened a branch in Baden-Baden—a spa town favoured by the European elite—run by their cousins.
The purpose of this watch remains a mystery, even though the metric system was adopted in Germany for weights and measures from 1876 onwards.
