Description
WANDERING-HOUR CLOCK, the movement signed ‘Jacob Widemann Aug[sburg]’, mid-17th century.
Dial painted on copper with a silver-plated hour circle featuring Roman numerals displayed in a 15-minute aperture, with fleur-de-lis markers for the half-hours.
Rectangular movement, barrels, fusee with gut cord, modified verge escapement, external counting wheel; the gong is missing.
Painted wooden and brass case in the shape of an altar, with a drawer beneath the dial lined with marbled paper.
67.5 x 50.5 x 15.7 cm.
A fine example of the Bavarian Baroque style, probably the work of Jacob II Widemann (d. 1664) but in need of complete restoration. The well-executed painting offers an original interpretation of the story of Mercury and Battus (Ovid II. 690–710). A table clock by Widemann is held at the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford.
