Description
Round-shaped easel clock, signed (dial and case) ‘Cartier’, bearing the fineness mark, the boar mark, and the silversmith’s mark ‘EB’ for Eugène Bako, circa 1910. Vermeil (over 800/°°°), gold, enamel lined with ivory (crack), weight 293.43 g. White enamel dial, Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the minutes, platinum hands set with rose-cut diamonds, rim of mauve enamel on a guilloché background with a ‘scale-ray’ pattern, outlined with white enamel fillets. Mechanical movement, probably with a straight-line lever escapement, compensated balance wheel and fifteen jewels; silver winding crown in the shape of a laurel wreath; original case opening via two hinged doors, lined on the outside with khaki-green morocco leather (the sun-exposed areas having turned light brown, showing signs of wear) with gilt metal fittings. The interior is lined with cream silk signed ‘Cartier, Paris, London, New York’ and the exterior bears the shop label ‘Fasano Giojelleria Torino, Via Roma No. 325.’ Diameter of the clock: 8 cm. Case: 0.4 x 10.7 cm. With its CITES certificate no. FR2607800067-K dated 15/04/2026. Models very similar to our clock, dated between 1908 and 1910, were featured in the exhibition ‘L’Art de Cartier’ at the Petit Palais from October 1989 to January 1990 (Catalogue Nos. 82 and 83). They are also featured in Olivier Bachet and Alain Cartier, *Exceptional Objects 2019*, Volume II. Two similar table clocks were offered at the ‘The Magical Art of Cartier’ auction (Antiquorum, Geneva & Tajan Paris, 19 November 1996), lots 45 and 46. Active between 1908 and 1923, Eugène Bako, a chaser, jeweller and goldsmith, crafted the vast majority of the clock cases for Cartier during this period, as well as other items produced by the house.
