Description
ENAMEL-PAINTED CASE, circa 1650/1660, fitted with a movement signed ‘Ja[co]b Foster 5962 London’, circa 1720.
Enamel-painted dial with a white hour ring (showing signs of wear and restoration), featuring Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, encircling a riverside landscape depicting a fisherman.
Gilded brass movement, silver regulator disc, openwork and engraved cock, verge escapement, architectural pillars.
Case entirely painted on enamel; the back depicts an allegory of Faith (showing signs of wear and cracks), whilst the reverse enamel depicts a man seated beside a stone bridge framed by trees; the middle section features a series of landscapes.

The allegory of Faith, executed in the style of Sébastien Bourdon, is also found on a watch by Nicolas Bernard at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, (Inv. 2359-1855) and on a case fitted with a movement by Cornelis Hemme at the Louvre Museum (Inv. OA 8453), to quote Catherine Cardinal (Les Montres du Musée du Louvre, Volume I, the Olivier Collection, 1984, p. 105), whom we thank for identifying the subject. Faith is personified by a woman holding a cross and raising her eyes towards the sky, where the dove of the Holy Spirit appears. She is flanked by a cherub holding up the Tablets of the Commandments and a young girl leaning on her elbow.
