Description
Gold-bezel watch with a double case, signed (dial and movement) ‘Mestayer London 301’, c. 1730. Champlevé dial in gilded metal, Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the minutes, separated by arcades, openwork blued steel hand. Gilded brass movement, openwork and engraved cock, silver regulator disc, verge escapement, architectural pillars. Solid gold case, double case and bezel in repoussé gilded brass; the case back depicts Medea in a forest preparing the elixir to restore Aeson’s youth (Ovid, *Metamorphoses* VII, 276–82). Diameter 4.8 cm. Work by Henry Mestayer, probably of Huguenot descent, who served an apprenticeship under Peter Garon in the Clockmakers’ Company of London in 1705 and was granted a master’s certificate in 1713.
