Description
LARGE gold ‘savonnette’ watch (weight 252.47 g) with quarter-hour repeater and date display, signed (dial and movement) ‘French Royal Exchange London No. 34319’, circa 1870; case circa 1902.
Guilloché dial in silver and gold, Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the date, centre engraved with flowers, ‘Breguet’ hands in blued steel.
Gilded brass movement set into the plate, engraved cock, compensated balance, gong repeater.
Gold case; both covers and the case back finely engraved on all sides with a floral motif signed ‘LC’, and bearing the Sheffield hallmarks for 1902/3, as does the engraved pendant. In need of restoration.
Diameter 6.3 cm.
The movement is probably the work of William French, who worked at the Royal Exchange until 1877; he is known for his marine and pocket chronometers.
The case, with its rich decoration, was certainly designed specifically for this movement, but its creator, LC, remains to be identified. An attribution to Lewis Cohen, a Scottish goldsmith, is a possibility.
