‘Onion’-shaped rod watch signed ‘Albert Baillon Paris’, c. 1720.
Dial with cartouches, Roman numerals for the hours, reading at 15-minute intervals on an inner circle, Arabic numerals for the minutes, engraved centre, two iron hands.
Gilded brass movement, large openwork bridge engraved with grotesque motifs, silver regulator disc, steel rack, Egyptian pillars, verge escapement, fusee with chain.
Gilded brass case entirely engraved with symmetrically arranged foliage and flowers. Diameter 5.8 cm.
Son of Jean Baillon, a watchmaker in Rouen (granted master’s status by royal decree on 27 September 1659), Albert Vincent Baillon was an apprentice to his brother Jean Baptiste Denis in 1700 in Paris, where he was granted master’s status on 6 September 1709.
