Silver rod-style watch with date display, signed (dial and movement) ‘Beuster London’. First quarter of the 18th century. Champlevé dial, Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the minutes, thirty-minute markers, date window; hands missing. Gilded brass movement, silver regulator disc, large openwork cock engraved with symmetrical foliage and featuring an added cock’s head, verge escapement, Egyptian pillars. Plain silver case. Diameter 5.9 cm. A rare example of an ‘onion’ watch manufactured for the London market. Beuster is probably a fictitious name. Expert: Anthony TURNER
