Double-cased staff watch with a decorated dial, signed ‘Dawson London 513’. Late 18th century. White enamel dial, the centre painted with a lakeside scene featuring buildings and a mountain in the background, Roman numerals at 10-minute intervals. Gilded brass movement, openworked and engraved bridge, silver regulator disc, verge escapement, pillars. Case and double case in plain silver. Diameter 5.8 cm. The movement is probably Swiss, manufactured as a replica, or to order, by one of the watchmakers bearing the name Dawson working in London at the time. ‘English’ watches with decorated dials are less common than their French equivalents.
