Signed double-cased silver verge watch (dial & movement) ‘Matt. Skinner London’, c. 1740.
Champlevé dial, Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the minutes, thirty-minute indicators, openwork brass hands. Gilded brass movement, silver regulator disc, openwork cock engraved with symmetrical foliage motifs featuring birds, verge escapement, Egyptian pillars.
Silver case; double silver case containing an advertising leaflet for ‘F. C. Westermann, Rotterdam (fl. 1800); the back engraved with two mermaids surrounding a coat of arms featuring an anchor with two stars, the whole set against a background of flowers and a dragon’s head.
Diameter 5.5 cm – Weight approx. 130.56 g.
Matthew Skinner was an apprentice to Francis Hill in the Clockmakers’ Company of London. He was journeyman on 6 April 1713 and became a master of the Company on 29 September 1746.
