Description
Signed double-cased silver verge watch (dial and movement) ‘Wm Wills London’, c. 1748. Champlevé dial, Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the minutes, openwork brass hands. Gilded brass movement, silver regulator disc, openwork and engraved bridge, verge escapement, pillars. Plain silver case bearing the London hallmarks for 1748–49; second case embossed with a scene depicting Erminia and the shepherds, Diam. 5.6 cm – Weight approx. 133.70 g. Movement probably Swiss, made in imitation of, or commissioned for, Wills. The scene on the case, probably executed in London, in which Erminia, having dismounted from her horse, removes her helmet to allay the shepherd’s fear, whilst his wife looks on, is based on a drawing by George Moser (1706–83) illustrating an episode from Torquato Tasso’s *Jerusalem Delivered* (1581).
