Description
Double-cased silver staff watch, signed (dial and movement) ‘Samson London 7247’, third quarter of the 18th century. Champlevé dial, Roman numerals for the hours, Arabic numerals for the minutes separated by arcades, date window, openwork brass hands. Gilded brass movement, silver regulator disc, openwork and engraved bridge, verge escapement, square pillars. Plain silver case; the second case is embossed with a scene depicting the philosopher Diogenes, beside his barrel, telling Alexander to step out of his sunlight. Diameter 5 cm. Movement probably Swiss, made in imitation of, or commissioned for, one of the Samson merchants working in London at that time. The scene on the case, probably executed in London, appears to be a version of this episode by a follower of Salvator Rosa (1625–73). Edgecumbe (2000), 107 no. 17. Expert: Anthony TURNER
