Wristwatch with a gilded, enamelled brass verge escapement, marked (on the dial and movement) ‘Breguet à Paris’, c. 1780. White enamel dial, Arabic numerals, brass pear-shaped hands. Gilded brass movement, silver regulator disc, open-worked and engraved bridge, verge escapement, cylindrical pillars. Gilded and engraved brass case, the caseback decorated with an enamel painting of an inconsolable couple, bezel set with brilliant-cut diamonds (a few missing stones). Diameter 5.1 cm. A very well-preserved watch, which may well date from the early period of Breguet’s production, between 1775 and 1786, for which no records exist. Expert: Anthony TURNER
