‘Doctor’s stopwatch’ with a second hand, marked ‘Jam[es] Upjohn & Co London 3180’, circa 1785.
White enamel dial, Arabic numerals for the seconds around the rim, Roman numerals for the hours on the subsidiary dial at 12 o’clock, brass and steel hands.
Gilded brass movement, fully engraved mainplate, silver regulator disc, openwork and engraved cock, verge escapement, cylindrical pillars.
Gilded brass case (showing signs of wear), double brass case covered in shagreen (worn).
Diameter 5.4 cm.
A member of a prominent family of clockmakers based in both London and Exeter, James Upjohn began working in 1749.
Second-hand watches, designed to enable doctors to count heartbeats, began to appear in the first quarter of the 18th century, but remained uncommon.
