CHRONOGRAPH WATCH signed (movement) ‘E Wise Manchester 27150’, circa 1897. White enamel dial bearing the inscriptions ‘Centre seconds / Chronograph / Patent No. 8227’, Roman numerals, Arabic numerals for the chronograph scale (0 to 300), gold hands, with the seconds hand in blued steel. Three-quarter platinum movement in gilded brass, cock engraved with foliage and the adjustment scale, lever escapement, compensated balance, chronograph controlled by a pendant using Richard Fennell’s patented system. Plain silver case bearing the Chester hallmarks for 1897–98, the manufacturer’s initials ‘RG’ (for Richard Gravenor, Coventry), and the movement number 27150; case back engraved with the name of a former owner, ‘William Roberts’, fluted case middle. Diameter 6 cm. In need of restoration. The patent indicated on the dial relates to the ‘start/stop’ system for the chronograph. It was granted to Richard Fennell (1832–1906), a watch finisher in Coventry, on 27 May 1889, with a variant patented on 31 May 1894. Emmanuel Wise (1843–1913) was born in Orzesze, Poland, and served an apprenticeship at Glasshütte under Ferdinand Lang. Around 1865, he emigrated to England and settled in Manchester in 1873, where he was naturalised in 1877. He built up a thriving watch and jewellery business. Expert: Anthony TURNER
