Description
Rare silver cup decorated with cupules and an umbilicus entirely decorated with shells, resting on a pedestal, stamped with the hallmarks of Dietrich von Rath and the city of Aachen Aachen, circa 1630. 103 g, diam. 10.7 cm, H. 3.1 cm. Excellent condition. See the Musée de la Renaissance Château d'Ecouen for an identical silver bowl hallmarked by the Parisian silversmith Thibaut de Vauzell (https://museerenaissance.fr/collection/objet/coupe). Dietrich von Rath was a silversmith of the early 17th century. Although his year of birth is not known, a few pieces of his that have been recorded show that he was active from 1604 to 1632. This magnificent bowl is a rare witness not only to a period of great wealth brought about by Europe's great voyages and trade in the 17th century, but also to the influence of Flemish craftsmen on 16th-century goldsmiths. It could contain food or drink. A silver bowl with the London hallmark in the inventory (LOAN:GILBERT.577-2008) of the Victoria and Albert Museum mentions a bowl imitating 16th-century German cups. An example of this cup was also immortalised in Ferdinand Bol's painting "Governors of the Wine Merchant's Guild", which is in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich under inventory number 29720. It shows a wine merchant ready to enjoy his drink with a pipette and a similar cup.
