Description
[PROVENANCE] Michel de MONTAIGNE - The Essays, with notes & new tables of contents by Pierre Coste
By the Society in Paris, 1725 - One of the finest and best editions of the Essays. It is the second given by Pierre Coste, published one year after the first of 1724 and more complete: Gueullette and Jamet aîné made important additions. This copy is complete with a fine portrait-frontispiece of the author engraved by Chereau le jeune.
Bound in full fawn calf with triple framing of gilt fillets on the boards with coats of arms in the centre, 5-ribbed spine and richly decorated boxes with reminder of the coats of arms, morocco title-pieces and end-papers, gilt edges and gilt roulettes on the tails and heads, marbled paper end-papers. Good condition overall, with some fine old restorations, notably to the headpieces and tailpieces. The interior is fresh despite the pages being a little browned and scattered brown spots.
A very fine copy in a PRESTIGIOUS PROVENANCE, copies bearing the arms of Montaigne's essays are uncommon and always sought after.
In-4, xcvi, 3ff, 362pp (13); 540pp (15); 413pp (15)
