Description
[PROVENANCE] Choderlos de LACLOS - Dangerous Liaisons
London, 1796 [Paris 1812] - Counterfeit of the second illustrated edition produced around 1812.
Edition decorated with fifteen out-of-text figures, including two frontispieces, engraved after drawings by Monnet, Mlle Gérard and Fragonard fils, and retouched by Delvaux for this edition.
EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE with the crowned cipher of Eugène de Beauharnais adorning the boards, bound in contemporary red half morocco with small corners, spine nicely decorated, in excellent condition. Fresh interior, a few scattered foxing not very pronounced, printed on wove paper.
This title is extremely rare, bearing the figure or arms of a famous person. Cohen does not cite any known copies, but this is the first one we have come across.
Eugène de Beauharnais was the son of Joséphine de Beauharnais and adopted son of the Emperor Napoleon I. He was one of his most talented subordinates, obtaining the titles of Viceroy of Italy, Prince of Venice, Grand Duke of Frankfurt, Duke of Leuchtenberg and Prince of Eichstätt. This somewhat curious title in his library is of great interest.
In-8, 415pp, 398pp.
