Description
[RELIURES] [ILLUSTRE] Jean de LA FONTAINE - Fables From Bossange, Masson and Besson in Paris, year IV (1796) - Magnificent copy of this lovely edition of the Fables, decorated with a frontispiece and 275 charming figures by Vivien, engraved by Simon and Coiny, which sometimes represents two to five figures per fable. The edition, copied by Bossange from Didot's 1787 edition, was printed on heavy vellum in 6 in-12 volumes and one in 4 in-8 volumes with very wide margins (the one in our copy). Splendid contemporary bindings in full red long-grained morocco signed Bozerian Jeune, who has produced here an impeccable masterpiece, triple framed in gilt fillets with friezes of gilt lace and cold lace, angular ornaments in the centres, spines with 5 false nerves and richly decorated boxes, red morocco title-pieces, edges, gilt edges and gilt roulettes on tails and heads. Superb back covers with moiré cloth endpapers, gilt lace frames decorating them and repeated red morocco borders with gilt frames. An EXCEPTIONALLY FRESH copy. Very fresh inside, with very few freckles, on fine wove paper which has remained quite white and with wide margins. In-8, 151pp, 108pp, 150pp, 160pp. "Copies containing the figures before the number are sought after". Cohen, Guide de l'amateur de livres à gravures du XVIIIe siècle, 553-554 Provenance: Library of Eugène Chatoney with fine engraved bookplate
