Description
[SCIENCES] Thomas BURNET [Th. BURNETII] - Telluris theoria sacra originem & mutationes generales orbis nostri etc. Joannem Wolters, 1699, Amstelaedami - A very good copy of this very curious work, first published in 1684 and consisting of 4 parts, the first two devoted to Tellus theoria sacra, the next two to archaeologiae philosophicae. Bound in well-preserved full vellum (a little soiled but not seriously soiled), inside fresh despite minor old marginal spotting, complete with beautiful engraved frontispiece, 2 folding engraved plates and 12 engraved in-text vignettes. "Histoire des Sciences de la Pleiade, p. 1104: "Burnet considers the earth to be a gigantic ovoid, whose crust was punctured during the Flood; underground waters would have gushed to the surface, while the fragments detached from the earth's crust would have formed the mountains. Burnet's thesis aroused great interest across the Channel, where it was translated into English in 1684". Caillet was more taken aback by the author's work: "La théorie sacrée de la Terre contient l'Histoire des temps anti-diluviens, basée sur les paradoxes les plus fantaisistes."
