Description
Fragment of a bas-relief depicting a bearer of funerary furniture. He is standing, shirtless, dressed in a short loincloth, walking towards the right. The piece of furniture, probably a table, rests on his head and is supported by his horizontal right arm. At the top, a partial hieroglyphic inscription reads "bring what is sealed", which makes sense for a furniture carrier. Egypt, Old Kingdom, 5th-6th dynasty, circa 2500-2200 BC. Limestone with traces of red polychromy. Size: 65.5 x 22 cm. Provenance: Acquired at public auction from Me Louis Marquès in Montpellier on 30 March 1996, photographed in the catalogue. Comparative bibliography: Christiane Ziegler, "Catalogue des stèles, peintures et reliefs égyptiens de L'Ancien Empire et de la Première Période Intermédiaire", Paris, 1990. An example representing a series of offering bearers is on display at the Musée du Louvre, under inventory number AF 10243. The Mastaba of Ty at Saqqara also has this series of bearers.
