Description
Virgin and Child standing on a crescent moon. Carved and polychromed limewood. The back is hollowed out. The back of the head has a distinct circular cut-out, a technique typical of Swabian sculptors. Our sculpture has largely retained its original polychromy. Central Franconia, circa 1490-1500. Height 130 cm. Condition report: probable later additions to Jesus' left forearm, four fingers of his right hand, four toes of his right foot, Mary's left thumb, as well as the leaf-shaped points on the top of the crown. The child's genitals are at the back. The silver bearded moon face has darkened due to sulphuration and oxidation. For a similar treatment of the child's hair, see the Virgin and Child (c. 1500-1510) in the altarpiece of the high altar in the Frauenkirche in Kreßberg-Mariäkappel (Baden-Württemberg).
