Description
Oak chest with iron banding. It rests on a structure with solid upright legs, assembled using mortise and tenon joints and secured by dowels to the front and side boards. The main front is made up of a single plank, while the sides, flap, back and back are made up of two or three planks joined flat. Around 60 nailed fittings ensure the solidity of the body and lid. Flap for five-hinged hinges. The fittings, floriated at the ends, are fastened with large round-headed nails set at precise, regular intervals. In the centre, the hasp lock cast repeats the fleur-de-lys motif at the corners. The belts of the case and lid feature discreet geometric motifs worked with a punch, forming a frieze of varying stars and chequered patterns. The hasp also bears traces of engraved decoration. The lower part of the feet are carved with late Gothic motifs. Germany, late 15th or early 16th century. H.85 L.205 D.70 cm. Restoration. Ref. Our model is similar to a chest in the Stadtmuseum Hagen (inv. 2017/8) dated 1525.
