Description
Linen waistcoat with a cream silk bib with embroidered braid motifs, geometric designs, floral and leafy garlands and stylised feathers, small round embroidered green silk buttons, late 18th century, height (to shoulder): 71 cm and width (edge to edge, back seams): 54 cm approx. Provenance: sale Orléans Mes Binoche et Maredsous 9/12/1995. This waistcoat, a piece of men's finery, follows the course of fashion at the end of the 18th century and bears witness to the change in taste towards lighter fabrics. It is a reminder of the vogue for embroidery in the clothes of the elegant man of the period, for which Lyon's workshops would become a model of excellence, drawing their inspiration in particular from the return to nature advocated by the philosophers.
