Description
Set of military accessories, Ottoman Caucasus, Dagestan, early 19th century Equipment consisting of a riding crop with a handle sheathed in red textile and metal wire braid, the silver tip nielloed and chased with floral decoration; a belt in red leather covered with a textile strip woven with silver thread, the buckles, loops and buttons in gold damascened steel, carrying a small leather pouch and two pistol grips sheathed in black velvet embroidered with floral motifs in metallic thread and polychrome cotton, the interior lined with red silk; an angled steel powder flask damascened with gold fleurons and foliate scrolls, closed by a horn tip, suspended from a leather shoulder strap worked like the belt, with four steel trimmings damascened with gold foliate scrolls; a cartridge belt known as a gazyirnitsa, carrying a case of ten silver-tipped gazyr cartridges embellished and chased with floral decoration, the leather case trimmed with red velvet, the shoulder strap worked like the belt and punctuated with four gold damascened trimmings. Seventeen other cartouches of the same type and parts of a loose cartridge belt in passementerie are included. Length of the whip handle: 34 cm; length of the first belt: 103 cm; height of a scabbard: 49 cm; length of its folded strap: 68 cm; length of the powder flask: 18 cm; length of the cartridge belt: 22 cm; height of a cartridge: 11.5 cm. Wear, oxidation, rust, minor accidents, one leather yoke of the whip detached. Provenance: Former collection of Mr Griège, a railway engineer at the end of the 19th century, then by descent. The collection of the Wawel Castle in Krakow includes a powder flask similar in shape to this set. Attributed to the second half of the 17th century, it is also damascened with gold and has a bone stopper rather than a horn stopper.
