Description
Elsie Marian HENDERSON, Baroness of Coudenhove (1880-1967). Cubist composition. Mixed media on paper. Circa 1915. Dim. 21x28 cm on view. Henderson's drawings bear witness to the undeniable influence of the avant-garde artistic currents to which she was exposed and to the depth of her research. Institutions such as the Colarossi, open to women, were necessarily liberal. Her early experiences show that she was deeply aware of the compositional principles of Cubism, the palette of the Russians in the Golden Section, the Simultaneity of the Italian Futurists, and the Synchronism of the Americans Morgan Russell and Stanton Macdonald Wright and the Czech artist Frantisek Kupka. Henderson's drawing is bold and determined. Her expressiveness and total ease with the abstract vocabulary demonstrate a superior talent, which could have fully blossomed in this language, had she remained faithful to it, and in the Parisian artistic milieu. Examples of Elsie Henderson's work are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Museum, the British Museum Print Room, the Contemporary Art Society and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. She is also represented in the collections of museums as far apart as Moscow, Washington D.C. and Auckland.
