Description
Miniature painted in colour taken from a manuscript book of hours. The scene is recounted in the Gospels (Mt. 21, 1-11; Mk. 11, 1-10 and Lk. 19, 29-40), and in that of Saint John (12, 12-19); however, the fact that the Lord rides a donkey is close to the source of Saint Matthew and Saint John, who literally interpret a messianic prophecy of Zaccharia (Zech. 9:9). The celebration of him by the inhabitants of Jerusalem is taken from the Acts of Pilate or the Apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus, where it is said that "the children of the Hebrews acclaimed him with branches in their hands, while others spread their garments on the ground. On the reverse of the folio is a representation of a coat of arms of the Habsburg family with two putti bearing a partially decipherable inscription in gold letters in Latin, probably evoking a title page and the date 1553 ("Officie (..) Her (...) Donad.(..) Sanc .....Clusive Seculum Romana Ecclesiam De Sciptum Ano 1553"). Sheet size: 13.7 x 9.5 cm. Presented in a wooden frame with marquetry decoration: 24.5 x 20.5 cm.
