Description
[PROVENANCE] The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments, and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, etc. Cambridge, Pitt Press, John William Parker, 1837 – An exceptional copy with a prestigious provenance at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, stamped on the front cover and featuring a handwritten note detailing the history of this volume. It was presented by the Bishop of Norwich (certainly Edward Stanley) to the newly crowned Queen Victoria, and subsequently passed into the hands of the Dean of Hereford and Deputy Clerk of the Closet on 1 August 1847: this was John Merewether, the renowned London antiquarian. A period binding in full morocco with embossed decoration, stamped with the Brighton Royal Pavilion’s monogram surmounted by a crown; a provenance of exceptional rarity, the Brighton Pavilion was a royal residence built in the early 19th century for King George IV and later served as a residence for his successor, William IV. Queen Victoria’s final visit to the site in 1845 was followed by the sale of the building and grounds by the government; a large part of the collection of art objects that adorned the interiors was taken away by the Queen. However, the Brighton Commissioners and the Brighton Vestry successfully petitioned the government to sell the Pavilion to the town for £53,000 in 1849. From then on, we can trace the history of this piece, which was probably given by Edward Stanley on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s coronation; she in turn presented it to John Merewether, a senior clergyman of the Royal Household and an expert in antiquities. Minimal wear on the spine, yet in very fine overall condition for this moving historical relic.
