Description
Atelier Jean Trotain A very charming Art Deco-era vermeil powder compact (silver of 800 thousandths or higher, plated with gold), rectangular in shape, with all four sides in black lacquer embellished with a design of red and blue peony flowers and buds, centred by a coral medallion engraved with a hummingbird amongst the flowers (China, 19th century, Qing dynasty) set in a half-bezel setting and adorned with rose-cut diamonds in a grain setting; the whole opens to reveal a compartment (with a flap) containing powder and a mirror (with a slit). French work from the 1930s, with an older central element, in keeping with the tradition of French jewellery of that period of incorporating artefacts from elsewhere that demonstrated craftsmanship. French master’s mark J – a mortar firing a rocket and a star - T, for Jean (Paul) Trotain, (born 8 December 1896 in Neuilly-sur-Seine and died 30 September 1982, Knight of the Legion of Honour, Christmas 1932 intake), who worked at 2 Rue Vivienne in Paris between 24 April 1924 and 4 February 1935. This workshop is known for having produced cigarette cases and other cosmetic boxes for firms such as Mauboussin, Sandoz, Keller, Fouquet, Black Starr & Frost, Ghiso, Templier and René Boivin. Numbered 380 on all parts (a few minor scratches from use, slightly more pronounced on the corners but no chips) Dimensions: 80 x 50 x 18 mm Gross weight: 148.27 g
