Description
Edmond ROSTAND (Marseille 1868–1918), writer, playwright, poet and essayist. A signed autograph letter addressed to a ‘dear colleague’, written from the Villa Arnaga in Cambo-les-Bains, in which he refers to a matter involving Sarah Bernhardt and her theatre. In 1898, she took over the management of the Théâtre des Nations by signing a 25-year lease with the City of Paris, the owner of the premises, which she subsequently renamed after herself. “I would be only too happy to join you in this matter; but have you consulted Madame Sarah Bernhardt? Are you sure she wishes for this municipalisation of her theatre, which you so generously desire for her glory and the interests of poetry? It would be very awkward for me to take any action in this regard without her or her son having asked me to do so, as they may have a different view of their interests from ours.” 1½ pages, in-8.
