Sculpture in welded iron with a patina finish.
Bears the artist’s monogram ‘R.J.’ on the underside and is dated ‘59’ (for 1959).

Danish School. A sculptor who worked directly in wood and stone, he very quickly turned his attention to
working with iron, a medium he would never abandon. He settled in Paris in 1947 and did not return to
his native country until 1969. A laureate of the Venice Biennale in 1966, he exhibited in
numerous galleries in Copenhagen, Paris and Munich, and several retrospectives
of his work were organised between 1991 and 1992 at the Matisse Museum in Le Cateau
Cambrésis, at the Denys Puech Museum in Rodez, as well as in Meymac, St Priest, Evreux, Oslo,
Liège, Amsterdam, The Hague, Pau and Paris. The Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris holds
a number of his works. He received numerous large-scale public commissions.
His work in cold-formed, welded iron, featuring deliberate oxidation and
anthropomorphic forms, places him within the ‘Cobra’ aesthetic ’ aesthetic. Towards the end of his life, his
sculptures became more structured, with a geometric tendency, or featured squares and
triangles of welded and painted iron set within the space. Most of his
works are marked with his monogram ‘R.J.’ or are unsigned.
This ‘raw’ sculpture that we are presenting today is one of the most
sought-after by collectors. It was acquired directly from the artist in
Meymac, his place of residence in France, by the father of Mr Jean Philippe Esther,
a friend and neighbour of the artist.
