Condition report: Framed Born in Blida (Algeria) in 1910, Maria Manton was a non-figurative artist of the New School of Paris. From 1948 onwards, she exhibited in group shows at the Colette Allendy Gallery and later at Lydia Conti’s gallery, where her works were displayed alongside those of Hans Hartung, Gérard Schneider and Pierre Soulages…
In 1961, she became general secretary of the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, to which she remained committed until her death in 2003.
Her works are held, notably, at the Musée national d’Art moderne in Paris, the Musée d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris, the Musée national des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, the National Museum in Budapest, and the Musée de Gajac in Villeneuve-sur-Lot…
More recently, some of her paintings were exhibited at the Musée Soulages as part of the exhibition “Women of the 1950s: Through Abstraction, Painting and Sculpture” (December 2019 – October 2020).
