Description
Ida Karskaya (1905–1990) Leaves Late 1960s Gouache and oil on paper mounted on canvas, signed lower right 177 x 150 cm Bibliography: Karskaya. Paris, Association des amis de Karskaya, 2015. Reproduced on page 146. Condition report: Framed “Abstract painting? Non-figurative? Expressionist? It is all of these at once, and even a little ‘figurative’... Karskaya belongs to no group, to no school. She strove to break free from any affinities she might have had with Soutine in her early days, and later with Michaux and Dubuffet, in order to find her own true artistic language. The result is these challenging, jarring, sometimes chaotic canvases, yet beautiful in their poignant violence...” Geneviève Bonnefoi, Lettres Nouvelles no. 17, July 1954 Ida Karskaya, an artist of Russian origin who spent time in Ghent before settling in Paris, occupies a position on the fringes of the Second School of Paris and Informel art. Employing a wide range of techniques – collages, torn paper, oil, gouache, recycled materials, reliefs, tapestry – her works express a unique, intuitive and poetic sensibility. Born in 1905, she travelled the length and breadth of Europe, lived through both World Wars, travelled to Mexico in the 1960s… and never ceased to develop her art: ‘I know what I stand for: freedom in art… Art, first and foremost, is total freedom.” An artist and a woman of great character, it is high time she was given a place on the walls of collectors’ galleries and museums.
