Description
Georges Adilon (1928–2009) Les Palmiers noirs 1965 Oil on cardboard, signed, titled and dated on the reverse 29 x 31.5 cm Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon from 1945, Georges Adilon was both a painter and an architect. This duality is described by Father Perrot, who in 1966 invited him to take part in the restoration of a chapel at the Collège des Maristes: ‘It is almost a paradox: a man who paints on a flat surface and who has an extraordinary ability to visualise everything in space. ” Another paradox is his constant search for light through the use of dark colours and texture. This quest lies at the heart of Georges Adilon’s pictorial and architectural work. In the manner of Pierre Soulages, he seeks to reveal luminosity, notably by exploring the power of black. This revelatory approach brings his work closer to lyrical abstraction.
