Description
Camille Bryen (1907–1977) Set of 2 prints Etchings on paper, signed lower right and numbered 18/125 and 47/50 lower left – 65 x 50 cm and 49 x 38.5 cm (image size) Provenance: > Private collection, Brittany
Condition report: Framed A painter, printmaker and poet, Camille Bryen was closely associated with the Surrealist group in the 1930s (he co-signed Charles Sirato’s ‘Dimensionist Manifesto’ alongside Jean Arp, Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia), the Nouvelle École de Paris, and, above all, a pioneer of Lyrical Abstraction, for which he organised the first exhibition in 1948, featuring Hans Hartung, Wols, Gérard Schneider and Georges Mathieu...
In the 1960s, Camille Bryen pursued a very free-form exploration of abstraction. His work broke completely away from figuration to focus on gesture, material and textural effects, in the tradition of Tachism.
He then produced works reminiscent of organic or cosmic visions, in which painting became a field of intuitive experimentation.
