Description
James Pichette (1920–1996) Composition 1961 Mixed media on paper, signed and dated lower right 47 x 61.5 cm Condition report: Framed The artist’s first abstract works date from 1947, when he was strongly influenced by Surrealism. In 1960 – the period of the work we are presenting here – James Pichette moved to New York, where he met Sam Francis and Calder. There, he discovered jazz in particular, befriended leading musicians, and his painting became gestural and rhythmic: colours and brushstrokes intermingled to form a pictorial melody. He then became a full-fledged member of the lyrical abstraction movement (alongside Gérard Schneider, Jean Miotte and others).
