Jean Piaubert (1900–2002) *Le Rivage des Syrtes* 1994 Mixed media on panel, signed and dated on the back of the frame, titled on a label on the back of the frame
22 x 75 cm Condition report: Framed Born in Gironde into a family of Bordeaux winegrowers, Jean Piaubert turned to abstraction very early on, as early as the 1930s! In 1947, the gallery owner Denise René organised his first solo exhibition, with a preface by Charles Estienne: ‘Piaubert ou l’aventure intérieure’. In 1958, he joined the Creuzevault Gallery; by then, he was one of the most prominent painters of the New School of Paris. His work, characterised by its connection to the earth and nature, took a new direction in 1961 when he decided to incorporate sand into the preparation of his compositions. The panel we are presenting here bears witness to this: the sand, the texture and the colours come together to form an abstract landscape whose interpretation is left entirely to the viewer…
Jean Piaubert’s works are held in major public collections: the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York…
