Description
Bertil Öhlund (1923–2003) Abstract Composition 1959 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 83 x 101 cm Provenance: > Galerie Michelle Champetier, Cannes,
> Private collection, Brittany
Condition report: Framed. Small tear in the centre right, sign of impact/scratch in the bottom left, traces of restoration on the reverse A Swedish painter and designer born in Stockholm, Bertil Öhlund trained in his native country and in Paris in 1949–1950 under André Lhote. His work bridges the gap between the abstraction of Auguste Herbin and the Op Art of Vasarely, and has done so since as early as 1959! as demonstrated by this painting, in which the abstract forms appear to fragment, creating an illusion of movement. His works are held at the National Museum in Stockholm and the Örebro Museum; like his compatriot Olle Baertling, he is a leading figure in Swedish abstraction, though he has not yet enjoyed the same level of fame as the latter!
